The example you found is a Scottish Gaelic proverb:
The Scottish Gaelic proverb says:

But the Irish proverb says:
Más áin leat moladh faigh bás."Más mian leat cáineadh pós."
(If you want praise, die. If you want criticism, marry.)
So the question is, which one are we to believe?
Perhaps we should heed the Manx proverb -
Astan er e amman, Yernagh er e teanga.
(Catch) an eel by his tail, an Irishman by his tongue.
